Led by the experienced and compassionate Dr. Rezan Doku, DDS, our Sterling Heights team is dedicated to diagnosing, treating, and managing gum disease with advanced technology and personalized care. If you’re noticing signs of gum trouble, don’t wait. Early intervention is the key to preserving your smile.

What is Gum Disease?

Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, is an infection of the tissues that hold your teeth in place. It’s typically caused by poor brushing and flossing habits that allow plaque, a sticky film of bacteria, to build up on the teeth and harden. In advanced stages, gum disease can lead to sore, bleeding gums, painful chewing problems, and even tooth loss.

  • Gingivitis: This is the earliest stage of gum disease, an inflammation of the gums caused by plaque buildup. Signs include redness, swelling, and bleeding during brushing or flossing. The good news is that gingivitis is reversible with professional treatment and improved oral hygiene.
  • Periodontitis: Untreated gingivitis can advance to periodontitis. At this stage, the inner layer of the gum and bone pull away from the teeth, forming pockets that become infected. The body’s immune system fights the bacteria, but the toxins produced start to break down the bone and connective tissue that hold teeth in place. This can cause permanent damage and requires professional intervention.

Do You Have Gum Disease? Recognizing the Signs and Symptoms

Gum disease can progress with subtle signs. Many patients aren’t even aware they have it. Be on the lookout for these common warning signs:

  • Red, swollen, or tender gums
  • Gums that bleed easily during brushing or flossing
  • Persistent bad breath or a bad taste in your mouth
  • Gums that are receding or pulling away from the teeth, making them look longer
  • Loose or separating teeth
  • Pain or discomfort when chewing
  • The formation of deep pockets between your teeth and gums

If you notice any of these symptoms, you should see a dentist immediately. Gum disease can progress silently and cause permanent damage if left untreated.

What Causes Gum Disease?

While plaque is the primary cause, several other factors can increase your risk of developing periodontal disease.

Cause / Risk Factor

Explanation

Poor Oral Hygiene

Inconsistent brushing and flossing allow plaque to turn into tartar, which only a dentist can remove.

Smoking or Tobacco Use

Tobacco reduces blood flow and slows healing in the gums. It is one of the strongest risk factors.

Diabetes

Diabetes weakens the body’s ability to fight infections, including gum infections.

Hormonal Changes

Pregnancy, menstruation, and menopause create hormonal fluctuations that increase gum sensitivity.

Genetics

A family history of gum disease increases your susceptibility.

Medications

Some medications reduce saliva flow or cause abnormal gum tissue growth, affecting gum health.

Poor Nutrition

A diet lacking essential nutrients weakens the immune system and increases infection risk.

Why Treating Gum Disease Early is Critical?

Seeking treatment at the first sign of gum disease isn’t just about saving your teeth; it’s about protecting your overall well-being.

  • Prevents Tooth Loss: By stopping the infection that destroys the bone and tissue supporting your teeth, early treatment is the most effective way to prevent tooth loss.
  • Protects Your Overall Health: Research has established strong links between periodontal disease and serious health conditions, including heart disease, diabetes, stroke, and respiratory issues.
  • Saves You Money Long-Term: Preventing advanced disease through early, non-surgical treatment helps you avoid the need for more costly and complex surgical procedures down the road.
  • Improves Aesthetics & Confidence: Healthy, firm, pink gums are the frame for a beautiful smile. Treating gum disease can eliminate redness and swelling, giving you back your confidence.

I switched dentists after going to the same one for years. I hadn't been to a dentist in a couple years because of bad dental anxiety and experiences. The care that I have experienced so far has been beyond amazing. Nicolle and Dr. Rana took their time. Explained what they were doing and made a detailed plan to get me teeth looking good. I highly recommend to anyone who has dental anxiety

From the time I walked into the office it was an extremely pleasant experience. The waiting room is large but welcoming with comfortable chairs and brightness. The whole place is very clean. The staff were friendly and very helpful. The wait was not long at all and I was taken for X-rays and taken to my room. They were present and made me feel at ease. The dentist was knowledgeable and led me through the process of what to expect with dentures and fixed dentures. He answered all my questions and explored with me the pros and cons of each.
